In the sacred land of Bharat (India), it is believed that during the era of Kaliyug, society faced growing unrest, injustice, and moral decline. Political conflicts among rulers created instability, while ordinary people struggled socially, economically, and spiritually. Concerned about the suffering on earth, sages and divine beings gathered at Badrikashram under the guidance of Bhagwan Narnarayan Dev to discuss the situation.
During this assembly, Rishi Durvasa, arriving from the Kailash mountains, became angered by what he perceived as disrespect from those present and declared that they would have to take birth in human form and endure the hardships of earthly life. Dharmadev and Bhaktimata humbly calmed the sage and accepted the divine course of events. It was then foretold that Dharmadev would be born to Bhaktimata in a Brahmin family and would help restore righteousness and protect people from the forces of evil.
According to tradition, Narayan Rishi revealed that this was part of a divine plan and that the Supreme would take birth as a saviour to uphold dharma and guide humanity. This prophecy was fulfilled with the birth of Ghanshyam, who later came to be known as Swaminarayan.
Swaminarayan was born as Ghanshyam Pande in Chhapaiya, near Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, in 1781. From an early age, he was known for his wisdom and spiritual inclination. At the age of eleven, he began a remarkable seven-year pilgrimage across India, adopting the name Nilkanth Varni. During this journey, he travelled through various regions, promoting spiritual values and helping communities.
After nearly a decade of travel, he arrived in Gujarat around 1799. In 1800, he was initiated into the Uddhav Sampradaya by his guru Swami Ramanand and was given the name Sahajanand Swami. Two years later, before his passing, Ramanand Swami entrusted him with the leadership of the sect. Sahajanand Swami later introduced the Swaminarayan mantra to his followers, and from that time onward, he became widely known as Swaminarayan, with the Uddhav Sampradaya gradually becoming the Swaminarayan Sampraday.
The sacred village of Chhapaiya, located about 36 km from Ayodhya in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, remains an important pilgrimage destination associated with the early life and spiritual legacy of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
